In 1898, Lyda was a 14-year-old African American girl who invented a new and improved hairbrush and was granted a patent. To this day there is little mention of the details of Lyda’s life. ‘Lyda Newman’ offers readers the opportunity to gain an understanding of how an African American, teenage female significantly enriched history. Her invention crosses genders, cultures, religions, and races to this day. Additionally, Lyda was an involved woman’s rights advocate. Children of all backgrounds can identify with Lyda’s youth, curiosity, and creativity while learning about her passion and unique contribution. This manuscript can potentially include discussion questions and vocabulary building.
