‘Thump in the Night’ By S.J. Pendergraft

It is the annual summer training, known as Beast Barracks, at West Point. A Squad Leader calls her New Cadets together to inform them of tomorrow’s activities, only for the New Cadets to ask her about Survival Week, which involves killing and skinning a rabbit. The Squad Leader then tells a story about why rabbit killing is no longer part of Survival Week, due in part to a skinned rabbit running away and the local wild rabbit population seeking revenge upon the New Cadet Training Battalion.
