‘Marginalia’ By Max Barker

The beach is tainted by a mysterious, oneiric force; neither beast nor bird dare stray within a mile of its location. Lucas, a young soldier made mute as a child, camps with his companions waiting for a dark and unknown evil to arrive.
A phantom world beyond the horizon is an escape as his notions of Legend are shattered upon the arrival of a herd of colossal snails. The lines that border reality and dream, faith and delusion are ultimately warped as he struggles to conflate his expectations of knightly heroes with the events that unfold around him.
