Author Profile: Emily Astor

Something Or Other Publishing is proud to introduce Emily Astor, a professional writer and winner of the 2nd Prize in the Thriller category of our 1st Annual Short Story Contest.

Emily Astor, professional writer. (Emily Astor)

Emily Astor lives in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in writing. Her hobbies include painting, sports-inspired workouts, and hiking with her dog.

Her award-winning story, Bury Your Dead, is part of SOOP’s upcoming anthology titled “SOOP’s Finest”. When Lana’s best friend falls into a deep depression after the sudden loss of her partner and a string of untimely incidents, she takes her on a Caribbean Cruise with tickets won in a contest. But as they embark on their journey, they don’t quite get the vacation they envisioned. Together, they discover that maybe losing everything is the best thing to have happened, and nothing comes without a price.

Jesus E. Bracho, SOOP’s Director of Marketing, sat down with Emily to engage in a fun Q&A session to learn her more details about her journey:

J.B.: What inspired you to write “Bury Your Dead”?

E.A.: The idea that sometimes we see things the way we want to and not necessarily how things are.

J.B.: What was the most challenging part of writing the story?

E.A.: Writing from the point of view of someone who is utterly lost.

J.B.: What genres do you personally like to read?

2nd Prize in the Thriller category of SOOP’s 1st Annual Short Story Contest. (SOOP)

E.A.: Mystery, thriller, and historical fiction.

J.B.: Do you have any other writing projects in the works?

E.A.: Yes! I am working on a novel that will be published on Amazon Kindle in the late fall/early winter of this year.

J.B.: Who is your target audience?

E.A.: Readers who are open-minded, like quirky characters, and enjoy literary fiction.

J.B.: What do you hope readers take away from your story?

E.A.: A sense that everything will turn out the way it will – and that’s ok – even if you can’t see it now.

J.B.: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

E.A.: Find a group of strong beta readers who will give you honest feedback! Always keep working to improve your work, and most importantly, never give up!
