‘You’ve Come A Long Way Baby’ by Melissa Malik

What to say… I am a thirty-three year old single mother in recovery from heroin. I have come a long way to be in the position I am in now which is not ideal but is way better than my life was. Sometimes I still feel the pain from the past. I always was told to see if someone would consider my story, so here I am. I started hating myself at a young age which led me to abuse before the drug abuse. I finally tried hard drugs at nineteen and all my pain was gone for the moment, I found myself on the street fighting, being arrested, selling myself, being abused in every way possible. The rehabs, the detoxes, the psych wards, but I kept going back. I think that’s all every addicts baseline though. However for the painful moments I did have some really funny things that happened or I did that nobody else can say they have done or went through. An example is one day,of course I was not getting my way, I bricked my sisters car and the brick bounced across the windshield making it so I had owed her more money for the damages. I had been jumped, (one of the many times) but this time I had mace and I was winning, (imagine that!) Following them onto a port authority bus spraying mace the whole time. All the poor people were coughing, driver and all. Much more..
