Roy McDonald was a conservative’s conservative and one of the most popular elected officials serving his rural region just north of Albany in upstate New York. The Republican supervisor for the town of Wilton, N.Y. went on to serve as an assemblyman and senator in the New York State Legislature where he voted against same-sex marriage. But he changed his mind in 2010 and said he wanted to do the right thing. HIs vote was key in passing the legislation that made same-sex marriage the law in New York. Then McDonald paid the price.
About the Author
Ken Tingley was editor of The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y. for 21 years. He wrote a nationally acclaimed local column and award-winning editorials while producing some of the finest small-newspaper journalism over two decades. Nine times the newspaper was name newspaper of the year. Tingley retired in 2020 and published a collection of columns “The Last American Editor.” Tingley published a second book in 2022 – “The Last American Newspaper” – chronicling the great work done by his newspaper over two decades and the threat local communities face without that local journalism.
