Floating in Darkness by Ron Garan (F.I.D. Crewmate)

Floating in Darkness

Humanity, along with all life on Earth, faces a crisis that threatens our very survival. This demands nothing less than a profound evolution of our consciousness. We can meet this challenge only by transcending our individual and collective egos and embracing the true nature of our interdependence with every living thing on the planet, as well as the planet itself.

In Floating in Darkness: A Journey of Evolution, Desert Storm fighter pilot veteran and NASA astronaut Ron Garan sees the crisis coming as he takes an extraordinary journey through war and peace, conflict and love—through both outer space and inner space. Defined by dramatic experiences in war and later in orbit, Ron’s voyage transforms him from a man focused on career and compassion only for his immediate “tribe” to one with a grave concern for the wellbeing of humanity and the planet we share with all living creatures.

In this outing, the second volume of the Orbital Perspective trilogy and the follow-up to his critically acclaimed first book, The Orbital Perspective: Lessons in Seeing the Big Picture from a Journey of 71 Million Miles, we travel with Ron on his journey of evolution. We’re there as he explores the dancing, intersecting orbits of religion, spirituality, and science. We’re with him as he ponders nuclear deterrence, and grapples with the effects of war on the human body, mind and soul — and his own role in the violence of combat. We see the universe through his eyes, from the ocean floor to Earth orbit and back. We witness Ron struggling with what it means to be mortal and basking in the sheer wonder and beauty of our world and beyond.

Ron shows us how to find purpose and find ways to detoxify our divisive culture, how to become a “white blood cell” in a growing immune response to heal our world. In Floating in Darkness, he shows us how to build a restorative and positive future for all.

About the Author

Former NASA astronaut and highly decorated combat fighter pilot Ron Garan racked up 178 days in space and more than 71 million miles in 2,842 orbits between tours on the International Space Station, flying on the US Space Shuttle and Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Prior to those journeys, he conducted research in the world’s only undersea research lab, Aquarius. A former test pilot and graduate of the US Naval Test Pilot School, Ron taught hundreds of elite fighter pilots how to “up their game” as an instructor pilot at the prestigious USAF Fighter Weapons School, the Air Force version of the Navy’s Top Gun. Today, Ron is celebrated for his research in space and for his humanitarian contribution to all life on Earth. To learn more about him, visit www.rongaran.com.
