Who said Sweet 16 was supposed to be just that? For Dulce, turning 16 meant nothing. She was too busy watching over her mom, waiting in stunned silence night after night, her ear pressed to her bedroom door, waiting to hear her mom’s anguished cries. Cries that would inevitably come, just like they always did. Only this one night, things had gone too far. The fighting was enough and Dulce had it. Ignoring her own fear, this brave teen left the safety of her room and ran to help her mom, literally saving her life. Her mom was her world, and she deserved a better life than the one she was in. But would Dulce’s sacrifice be enough for her mom to choose her? To choose a life of calmness, and peace and leave the man that nearly killed her? Or would Dulce be the one to have to choose her own fate at just the tender age of 16?

About the Author

Author Jessica Parrish makes her debut publication with ‘Dulce’, a YA short story that placed second in its genre in SOOP’s Short Story Anthology Writing Contest. A self proclaimed trauma fiction writer, Jessica pulls from her own experiences and writes about real, gritty topics in ways that are raw and relatable. Fairy tales and happily ever after\’s are not always evident, but sometimes just surviving is the true victory. She is an up and coming author with plans to release original pieces in many different genres, ranging from adult fiction, to children’s books and everywhere in between. She wholeheartedly believes that there is healing in sharing, which is what she aims to do with her stories.
