‘The Ceiling’ By K.S. Marquez

Alicia is a medical student who was forced to return home during the onset of the deadly influenza outbreak. After a heavy cryptic dream about a herd of deer being hunted, she faces another day of seemingly endless isolation.

Alone and exhausted from the tedium of quarantine, she succumbs yet again to her daily routine of staring at the ceiling. She finds pleasure in this mundane activity by looking for hidden figures formed from the blotches of the ceiling surface. These images allow her to be absorbed in her innermost thoughts, greatest fears, and deepest desires.

Like the deer in her dream, she battles the emotional and physical toll of loneliness and the fear of death. Adamant to never leaving her house, she receives news that makes her rethink her decision.
