‘Inhaling Smoke’ By Phoebe Conrey

The burning, not from the fire licking at your body but rather the the fumes. Thick and black, pushing unto your airways and burning the tender skin, drying it out. The gasping that rips through the air. Then the silence that ashen smell that is left behind and the broken down resemblance of things that are blacken and broken and yet you still feel like the soot and smoke is filling your lungs. You still can’t breathe.
