An aging debaucherous slumlord on the lost coast realize that his long tenure of impunity for his excessive greed and. Criminal tyranny are coming to a close as the Christmas holiday finds him driving home in a sudden downpour. As he and his wife prepare for the traditional celebration with the slumlord’s stooges, he is strangely aware and thoughtful. The party includes booze and drugs, food and games like Scrabble. For the stooges this is a big deal and for the Slumlord and his wife it is the first time they’ve given much thought to their lives.
This is not Discknsian morality or an unseemly foray into redemption or even justice. Indeed it is none of these things which is ultimately as real as it gets in a life where there is no such thing as instant karma. karma itself seems dubious.
In this transgressive scrutiny of the season and how people perceive it, the fact that none of these characters are remotely likable yet we empathize with them anyway, suggests the spirit of a
post modern Christmas
