‘The Sinking of the Sweet Melinda’ by Tim McBride

Dealing with an alcoholic mother at home,teen brother and sister are reluctant participants in survival and firearm tactics training with their police officer father. While enjoying a family boating day on the Hudson River, their training comes in handy when they stumble upon an Iranian terrorist plot to launch rockets at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant from a boat on the river. Preparation for this day on both sides culminates into a boat to boat battle on the river resulting in the terrorist plot being foiled and the sinking of the family boat, the Sweet Melinda, named after their mother. The issues in this story address the problem of teens wanting to have more control over their lives but don’t , Dealing with an alcoholic parent, radicalism and the conflict one reluctant Iranian operative has when he has to keep his admiration for the American culture a secret from his fellow Iranians.
