‘The Quakies’ by Barry Hughes

I’m Jake. My 13-year-old friends and I were on a special project with our teacher when strange things occurred, including the Quakies talking to me. An accident occurred and Mr. Maker disappeared, leaving us alone, scared and in the dark. After a harrowing day’s search, we left to report it and discovered a dirty, barefoot, bloody young woman limping along the trail in a dirty white dress. Ruth said she’d been trapped within the Quakies for 69 years. I fell in love with her and convinced my step-mom to say she was a cousin recovering from surgery at my house. The cops thought we killed Mr. Maker, but the only evidence was Ruth’s blood on the Jeep. After much controversy, the evidence proved our innocence, but their suspicion remained. A mysterious Ute Shaman, Mr. Olsen, convinced me he could rescue Mr. Maker and our troubles would be over. I was afraid Ruth would go back to the Quakies to find peace. It took a complex escape plan, but we went with Olsen to the Quakies. There, he revealed the true identities of the Quakies and himself. We rescued Mr. Maker, but the story didn’t end there.
