Melinda is a young woman living with her parents, Cynthia and Louis, in rural Idaho. One day, Cynthia reveals to Melinda that Louis is having an affair and wants to disinherit them. They both decide to preemptively murder him and dispose his body in a swamp during the night. To cover it all up, they tell the police that Louis went missing while heading to a conference out of town. But the police are soon skeptical about their story upon encountering contradictory details during the investigation.

While the investigation is ongoing, Melinda learns that Cynthia had completely fabricated details of Louis having an affair. She wanted to get rid of Louis quickly rather than go through a potentially long and expensive divorce. Enraged, Melinda kills Cynthia and then tries to kill herself. But after several failed attempts, Cynthia’s ghost appears and reveals that, for killing an innocent man, Melinda is cursed with eternal life. Melinda then sets the house on fire and flees to Montana in a vain attempt to escape Cynthia’s omnipresence.

After surviving a drowning attempt, Melinda gets rescued by a man named Ken. Soon after, Cynthia sadistically makes Melinda stab him to death. For having killed two innocent men, Melinda is further cursed with forever driving on the roads of
