‘Juveniles’ by Hunter Smith

Juveniles is a grim story about an unknown European country controlled by a fierce Totalitarian government that (similar to the Roman Empire) finds entertainment in arenas. Every child is raised into the arena and from age 8 fights on teams depending on their area. The team the story will revolve around is Team 7, the only remaining team of the first 10 teams made. Specifically, it is told from the view of a child on the team, ‘Ash’. These children are pit against each other for the entertainment of the government and the rich. Meanwhile a revolution is stirring. The government, although rich, strong and fierce, cannot prevent a rebellion. Sector 3 of the country remains under rebel control. However, the leader, ‘Maxis’, had his little brother killed in the arena and blames the arena children for it. The firing continues on and the rebels make gains. Then the story pitches forward. After 6 years of fighting the unnamed capital of the country falls. Democracy is beginning to be established. However, ‘Maxis’ seeks revenge and the arena teams, although thinking they are free, are sent to a high security prison surrounded by a vast swamp. Now the arena children must escape and seek their freedom yet again. After all this, a revolution will start, this time… it begins with them.
