But when she is presented with her birthright, an ancient book written by the first seer of Bury Down—a book which she must accept and vow to protect—the book burns her and she hears it whisper Murderer. Fearful of the path her life will take if she accepts the book, she refuses her inheritance. Avoiding her mother, she tries to elude destiny as well by seeking refuge as a sheep shearer’s apprentice, unaware that she will soon be forced to summon the courage to open her mother’s book and face a truth more terrible than death itself.
