Exploring the Moral Compass of Artificial Intelligence with Gilbert Hakim

In collaboration with the Baha’i Center of Clearwater, we proudly announce CEO and Tech innovator Gilbert Hakim as the special guest for the first spotlight show of Created In The Image of God: Exploring The Role of Religion In Society.

Daniel Sanderson, CEO of PlankSip®, an international philosophy and cultural media outlet, will conduct this unique interview discussion by addressing the topic of “Artificial Morality: Can Technology Assist Us in Evolving as a Species?” and the ethical questions raised in Ian M. Giatti’s Christian Post Reporter article on Elon Musk’s Neuralink.

A graduate of Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Master of Science in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, Gilbert Hakim is widely recognized as a leading figure in laboratory information systems (LIS). He has been at the forefront of LIS innovation since the late 1970s and continues to push the boundaries in genetics-based LIS and workflow automation. Known for his hands-on approach, Mr. Hakim is often found at client sites, interacting with laboratorians, clinical diagnosticians, and medical professionals to gain valuable insights that inform the vision of his company, SCC Soft Computer, to provide innovative and practical technological solutions to the healthcare industry, primarily in the clinical laboratory.

His pioneering spirit, passion for healthcare IT, and understanding of the healthcare industry’s regulatory environment and rapidly changing markets, coupled with his expert knowledge of software development and the dedication of SCC’s diverse global workforce, have made SCC Soft Computer the world’s largest laboratory and genetics information systems vendor.

As a philanthropist, Mr. Hakim is dedicated to giving back to the community with charitable contributions to various organizations through his charitable Golden Age Foundation and the creation of an application, Ocean 2.0 Interfaith Reader, a custom ebook reader designed for the exploration and study of the sacred literature of the world’s religious traditions. The platform offers a simple cross-platform reading experience, an immersive audio-integrated reading experience, and valuable analysis and research tools.

As a speaker on many subjects, Mr. Hakim is versatile and can answer questions most people avoid. Understanding his perspective on the fundamentals of our upcoming discussion is essential to follow the direction of this episode.

His definition of Artificial Intelligence using Machine Learning

From a broad speaking perspective, use of Artificial Intelligence translates to the predictability of the future based on events in the past. This causes creation of a new environment where we feed data about the history of past behavior of humans or events in many different areas to develop predictions on outcomes and act on this historical information.

Examples of AI’s Presence in our Daily Lives

For instance, in medicine, it is possible that AI can predict whether you will have a heart attack within the next 48 hours based on a blood test and your vital signs. Health Care Providers can successfully use machine learning language to treat patients by running your medical records with lab results and vital signs of anywhere from 40 to 100,000 people. Based on comparing that data, scientists have created formulas to see which results have more effect in predicting heart attacks. Once AI systems develop different variables, such as age range, body fats, and so on, they massage the factors of these valuables and adjust them based on past information. These variables ultimately lead to a formula that can produce a binary decision on whether you will have a heart attack or not.

Talking about the Good and Bad of AI

Artificial Intelligence is essential in today’s political systems, allowing analysts to determine how parties can attract minorities to vote. First, they label the main variables to determine certain groups: age range, income range, and education range; and based on their past voting pattern and substantial social media data leaks, analysts can decipher a formula to have a narrative their employers can push to attract those people based on their interests. AI changed the advertising game long ago, which is nothing new. On Wall Street, most retail investors look at potential psychological events to determine stock movement, although the primary variable for stock pricing is supply and demand. The Financial analysts basing their decision-making on the prior history of the stock movement feed all this information to machines, and the machines using the correct information beat people all the time. There is no adequate regulation on these behaviors and to what extent you can leverage Artificial Intelligence.

Mr. Hakim’s Cautions about the Future of AI

Facial recognition is one of  many abilities granted to organizations that employ Artificial Intelligence, and this has become a common medium of mobile security. These AI systems code characteristics of every face, and based on those characteristics, they can search a pool of millions and millions of people, find the person online and detect where they are. If you think about it, totalitarian governments can use it as a powerful supervision tool to spy on people. Artificial Intelligence, like everything else, can be used for right or wrong.
