Author Profile: Danielle Ice

Something Or Other Publishing is proud to introduce Danielle Ice, a creative writer and winner of the 3rd Prize in the Children’s Fiction Category of our 1st Annual Short Story Contest.

Danielle Ice, creative writer. (Danielle Ice)

Danielle Ice dreamed of writing and one day publishing her books ever since she was in elementary school and won a writing contest involving a story about fairies that live in pumpkins around Halloween (very on-brand for a 7-year-old). She practiced writing novels and short stories, mainly in science fiction/fantasy. She loves movies, video games, going on obscenely long walks, music, writing books, and people reading her books! And her husband. But only slightly more than her cat.

Danielle’s award-winning short story, Alyssum’s Wish, is part of SOOP’s forthcoming anthology currently titled “SOOPs Finest”, set for release on December 2022. Alyssum is a young girl from a time long ago who wants nothing more than to get rid of winter forever, but when she finds a woman who can grant her wish, will she be able to fulfill the woman’s requests so she can get her deepest desire?

Jesus E. Bracho, SOOP’s Director of Marketing, sat down with Danielle to engage in a fun Q&A session about her writing journey:

JB: What inspired you to write “Alyssum’s Wish”?

DI: I wanted to write this story because while myths and legends are a key part of our storytelling now, I wanted to see if I could flex my writing skills to see if I could write an original myth of my own while still being inspired by old stories that were used to explain things we couldn’t understand years and years ago.

JB: What was the most challenging part of writing the story?

DI: I would say the most challenging part has been to recreate a myth using elements that don’t already exist. For example, the trope of retrieving things for a higher being before they will fulfill a request is very common in myths and legends, but I still wanted to maintain a sense of originality while still maintaining the traditions of older tales.

JB: What genres do you personally like to read?

3rd Prize in the Children’s Fiction Category of SOOP’s 1st Annual Short Story Contest. (SOOP)

DI: I like to read a wide variety of genres, from chick lit to fantasy. Recently though, I’ve been interested in young adult murder mysteries, though that might be since it’s closer to fall, the spookiest season 🙂

JB: Do you have any other writing projects in the works?

DI: Right now, I’m working on the sequel to my first novel: Into the Storm from the Tides of the Universe series, which should be published next spring. It’s a sci-fi/fantasy young adult series about an alien race bent on destroying humanity for revenge and using cosmic beings called elementals to do it. Still, Admeera and her crew are the ones leading the charge to thwart them and recruiting elementals to help them along the way.

JB: Who is your target audience?

DI: The great thing about myths and legends is that they really apply to all ages and backgrounds since they’re all there to teach a lesson. Though the protagonist is a young girl, I believe we all have something to learn about the seasons and their purpose in the grand scheme of things.

JB: What do you hope readers take away from your story?

DI: I would hope readers would be thankful for all seasons of their lives, or at least for the things they have learned about themselves through the more challenging times. I also hope that readers find a renewed interest in myths and legends since they’re the grandparents of prose and usually have some key takeaways about humanity that we can see better as adults than when we read the stories as children.

JB: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

DI: The biggest advice I can offer is to jump in and try. There won’t be a neon sign telling you it’s your chance to finally jump in and start writing consistently, read books to improve your craft, write your very first story or full-length novel, or submit it to a publishing house. It takes bravery to show your word art to the world, so take the leap of faith: your journey starts now.
