Author Profile: Leah Reise

Something Or Other Publishing is proud to introduce Leah Reise, an exciting sci-fi writer and winner of the Fiction Grand-Prize Award of our 1st Annual Short Story Contest.

Leah Reise, writer, novelist and healthcare professional. (Leah Reise)

Reise is a frontline healthcare professional, novelist, and writer. As a young girl, she found liberation in expressing herself through writing. It took her to a place of wonder and gave her a voice. Her first article, “Open Letter to the People of Sonoma County,” about social justice, was published in the Sonoma County Peace Press in August of 2000, marking the start of her promising career as a writer. A Vampire Story,” a not-so-ordinary vampire tale that draws you into a journey of love, loss, and self-discovery, was her first novel and the first chapter of her sci-fi series, The Beauty in Darkness, published in July 2016. Two years later, she picks up the story and takes the storyline to interesting ventures on “A New Race,” the second series chapter where she intrigues the audience with scientific and philosophical themes that will keep you wondering until the end of the trilogy.

Reise delivers a horror filled with satisfying moments of drama and suspense, as well as a sisterly bond that elevates the story to another level … the truth found in the relationship between the two sisters, a sanctuary from the darkness that surrounds them and a glimpse of the beauty that we find in trust, in acceptance, in each other.

IndieReader

Grand Prize Winner in the Fiction Category of SOOP’s 1st Annual Short Story Contest. (SOOP)

Her winning story, The Irony of Everything, is part of an upcoming anthology from SOOP currently titled SOOP’s Finest: a collection of award-winning short stories, and it will become her fourth published piece in winter of 2022. Her story transports you into a dystopian future world where it happens to be the very last day the Earth will exist, as a comet is headed to the planet and will make an impact within the hour. We experience the lasting moments from the perspective of a humbly conflicted man who sits upon a tree swing to watch the grand finale on a hill above his village. He awaits the end in solitude and is ready for death, or so he thought.

Jesus E. Bracho, SOOP’s Director of Marketing, sat down with Leah to engage in a fun Q&A session to learn more about her:

JB: What inspired you to write “The Irony of Everything”?

LR: My usual restless and morbidly melancholy mind

JB: What was the most challenging part of writing the story?

LR: Not believing it.

JB: What do you hope readers take away from your story?

LR: Perhaps a newly found sense of peace and joy.

JB: Who is your target audience?

LR: I’m looking to attract readers with a scientific interest, and those who are not afraid to face their own fears and insecurities. Also, just genuine good people who strive for selflessness!

JB: What genres do you personally like to read?

LR: Vampire romance, paranormal, and medical science, in that order.

JB: Do you have any other writing projects in the works?

LR: I am working on the final chapter of The Beauty in Darkness series. I also just finished translating its first chapter and it’s currently in the editing stage.

JB: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

LR: Do not be afraid of your work not being liked! There will always be readers who either love or hate your writing or story. Every reader has different preferences and interests. Just write a story that is well-written and interesting to you, something that tugs on your heartstrings, and the right audience will enjoy it!
