C.B. Lyall’s debut novel, The Virus of Beauty, was released in 2019. She grew up in Stockton-on-Tees, England. Since then, she has lived in India, Belgium, Hong Kong and the USA. She currently resides in the Hudson Valley, north of New York City, with her husband. She has three adult sons and one grandson. She’s also addicted to golf, reading and escaping into her own worlds.

Moving On
Lucy knows the routine before a relocation move the company arranges a Look/See visit. She has reached the stage in her life where another move will mean her signing up for a long term role as trailing spouse. Mike sees the road ahead as golden. This move means advancement and the fast track to him. The tension between the couple has been building. A ten hour flight away from the family has become a marital showdown.

1. What inspired you to write your story?
Personal experience of picking up the family, and moving from one continent to another with only six weeks notice. Unlike Lucy, I’ve always embraced the adventure of learning about new cultures. I can appreciate her reluctance. It can be overwhelming.
2. What was the most challenging part of writing your story?
The word count. The story needs to be simple enough to fit into the limit while entertaining enough. After a few outlines I settled on making my story feel like a classic ghost story that might be told around a campfire.Â
3. What genres do you personally like to read?
Horrors and thrillers of course but I also read outside of my genre, everything from classic naturalism to 70s science fiction.
4. Do you have any other writing projects in the works?
I am currently working on my first novel about a private detective who finds himself faced with the unexplainable when a young widow discovers her husbands secret
5. Who is your target audience?
Adult readers, though, I was reading King and Barker at 13.
6. What do you hope readers take away from your story?
I hope that after they finish the story they find it hard, just for a second, to turn off the light at night.
7. Do you have any advice to aspiring authors?
Read as much as you write, more in fact. Write till it’s a habit, and never write to please someone else, write for you
