#MarketingMonday: Writing a Summary

Summary

When writing a summary for a book, you need to make sure that you give the audience what they need to get them to want to buy your book. Writing this condensed version will be one of the hardest things that you can do as a writer. When you write a summary you need to give the audience just enough of your story that will make them come back for more and actually want to read the whole book.

When an author has a book, they need to write a synopsis for the back of the book so that it grabs the reader’s attention and gets them to keep reading. How would one do that you ask? You have to have a hook that will grab the reader’s attention. Read the backs of several books to understand better what your goals are and what you may need to do. Reading other’s ideas and books will help you to create your own summary and understand the genre better.

There are many ways that you can create a way to make reader’s read your book. Use what you know to help you market yourself. This will allow the reader to get a piece of you and your work at the same time. Writing an abstract for your work is one of the things that make author’s cringe. You have to take your book and make it into something compact and make it enjoyable at the same time. It scares a lot of us, but it is worth it.

By definition, a summary is the condensed version of a story. This means that you need to take your story and make it a version that will tell the story without giving away too much. One thing that you do not want to do is rewrite the original piece. That will not give you the result that you are looking for. Refer to the central ideas and the main plot when you are writing a synopsis of your work.

Remember when you create this part of your work. A lot of writers have a hard time condensing their work to a paragraph or two that tells the whole story. It can be a lot of work to do write this part of your story, but a necessary part that will help you sell books. Another thing to remember have fun with it and create something that you will be proud of and want to show off by putting it on the back of your book.
