As my journey in marketing Life at 12 College Road continues, I keep posting to my Facebook page, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, and my website. Fortunately, as I have said before, with the assistance of SOOP, I have not had to travel this unmarked and unpaved road alone.

It is important to maintain an ongoing presence on your social media platforms. That means you should post to your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts at least once a week. I post to Twitter every morning, and although I do not post about my book all the time, I make it a point to post items that direct readers to my website. Once there, they will see the piece mentioned and also see items about and photos of my book. I use LinkedIn less frequently, but whenever I have done something that concerns my book, I share it publicly on LinkedIn, and to a variety of groups that I belong to on LinkedIn.

It is not easy determining just how much you should be posting about your book, but the concern is not to turn people off, while at the same time staying in the forefront of people’s minds. That is why I post a lot on my Facebook page about other things that I have written, be they poetry, random thoughts, recipes, or just photos I happen to like and want to share with others. If there was a formula that we could just plug in, that would let us know where that line is between piquing people’s interest—friends and strangers alike—or just plain annoying them, that would be terrific. But alas, I have not heard of one, so if you have, please share.

I mentioned last month that I would let you know how things went at the Local Author Showcase and the book fair. The Local Author Showcase at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Saratoga Springs, New York, was in collaboration with the Adirondack Writers Center (AWC). The event showcased local authors and served as a fundraiser for AWC. I was provided a table to sell my book and the bookstore set up a display of all the books of the local authors participating. The bookstore also purchased several copies of my book and is now selling them.

The other event that I mentioned was Autumn Leaves: The 19th annual Glens Falls Chronicle Book Fair. It took place Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, in downtown Glens Falls. The Chronicle Book Fair, founded in 1996, showcases hundreds of authors, publishers and books of all kinds from our region of upstate New York. I participated in the all-day event and had a table set up where I displayed my book. I was introduced to other authors, sold copies of the book, and met many interesting people. The event provided a great opportunity to network with others, share concerns, get helpful tips, and arrange other events in which to participate. Book fairs are held all over the country, and it is the type of event you should attempt to be a part of in your region.

In my next post I will let you know how things are going and what else I have learned.

It’s not always the earth-shattering events that are most significant in our hectic lives. More often, it’s the small things, many long forgotten, that touch and shape us most deeply. Our memories of these events might bring smiles, or anger, or even a desire to forget. But every one of them helps to make us who we are today — and in some ways, who we will become tomorrow. Join Eric Mondschein at the unhurried pace of a cup of coffee for a surprising and powerful journey in which laughter inevitably mingles with tears, sorrow turns to joy, and loss almost becomes bearable.
