“The Girl That Wasn’t Min” by Lilian Surgeson

Mulligan isn’t the best thief in Aberddu, but he is definitely a man with (something like) a plan. When he finds Min and her friends scraping a living on the streets of the Poor Quarter, he hatches his best one yet. Together, Mulligan and the girls build a rock-solid ruse that will take them in to the homes of the city’s great, good, and stinking rich. It seems like the perfect plan (if Mulligan can avoid getting married off) but nothing that good can last forever.

The game they find themselves playing is more complex than they first suppose, and soon they are plagued by enemies far harder to run from than a militia patrol. Greed, resentment and divided loyalties cause their scheme to start crumbling around them. As Min and Mulligan start to enjoy the high-life, it looks as though they may spoil things for themselves before anyone rumbles their ploy.

Four street kids and a con-man take on the whole of the Aberddu aristocracy, but just exactly who is playing who and will anybody come up smelling of roses?
